Farming in Florida is a challenge, but it helps to know your growing seasons.
Summer is hot, wet, and Buggy. It is a good time to plant heat loving annuals perennials like:
Fruit Trees like Avocadoes, Loquats, Figs, Mangoes, Bananas, Florida Peaches, Moringa etc.
Bushes and flowering plants like Hibiscus, Turmeric, Ginger, Yucca (aka Cassava), Lemongrass, Garlic Chives. Annual Veggies like Seminole Pumpkins,
Hot Peppers, Eggplant, Sugarcane, Okra, Sweet Potatoes, and Malabar Spinach.
It is not a good time to plant a "traditional" veggie garden, because it is just too hot (and the nights are too warm for most veggies and fruits as well). Instead, focus on working on compost or getting your space ready to use in the fall. A fun way to make a new garden in the summer is to make a lasagna garden.
Lasagna Gardening is a way to layer materials (like in a lasagna) over and over until you have a raised garden that will decompose into a great veggie or herb garden. All you need to do is collect different materials to layer in your space. Each layer should be 1-4 inches deep. You can use layers of leaves, grass clippings, compost, soil, newspaper, small sticks and mulch, peat moss, manure, wood ash, etc. It is best to wait a few months after making a lasagna garden before planting into it. So it is a perfect Summer project!
