What to Plant in April/May in Central Florida
This is the last month for planting warm weather veggies before it gets a little too hot and rainy.
Crops to plant in this month in Central Florida are:
Beans, Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, Okra, Squash, Cucumbers, Garlic Chives, Basil, Sunflowers, Seminole Pumpkin, Hibiscus, Moringa, Malabar Spinach, Turmeric, Ginger, and all kinds of other heat loving crops.
This is also a good time of year to start thinking about planting Cover Crop when your garden gets a little too unruly. You can plant Cover Crop and build soil for the next growing season.
Spring is the time start new fruit trees and get them established before all the summer rains hit. Try varieties that like this climate like:
Banana trees, cold hardy Avocado varieties, Loquats, Citrus trees, Figs, Pomegranate, Surinam Cherry, Barbados Cherry, Asian Pear, Chickasaw Plum, Mulberry, Persimmon, etc. You might be able to grow Mangoes, Starfruit, and other tropical fruits if you are able to keep them covered when it gets too cold.

NSB native, Elizabeth Dannemiller Merachnik, owns and operates Green Flamingo Organics. After gardening at Organic Farms across the country through WWOOF USA, Liz has come back to her home town to help bring organic produce to her community.
